Transparency along the ground plane uniting the entire campus and blurring indoors and out. Comprised of two 80-foot bars, bowed and conjoined create a unique prolate oval with a central courtyard at its center. Expansive exterior glazing ensures access to daylight and view while horizontal fins and fritting optimize energy efficiency and visual comfort. The building virtually disappears into the environment, designed to reflect the sky and surrounding landscape. The building responds to contextual influences in both mass and materiality as well as meeting the number one strategic goal - access to natural light. SchoolsFirst sought, “To create collaborative, flexible, and healthy workspaces that foster a culture of inclusivity and transparency, and inspire knowledge sharing among the team members.” Transitioning several departments into one structure from all over Orange County required defining a new standard to be used throughout the institution. A four-month-long Workplace Strategy effort paved the way for Architectural design, Interior design, Engineering, Landscape, and Lighting to design a project that supports all client goals collaboratively. Just as their founders saw the organization overcoming economic adversities, the new headquarters became an opportunity to “Solve the Right Problem Really Well.” The selected firm provided a fully integrated design and strategy services all project challenges had a holistic approach. Eighty-five years later SchoolsFirst’s first ground-up new Headquarters will sit prominently on their Tustin campus. One hundred twenty-six school employees from Orange County pooled $1,200 and established a financial institution to help improve each other’s lives. SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union began in in the middle of the Great Depression.
